PentaCityGroup launch latest phase of New York City wayfinding system on the new B44 Select Bus Service route in Brooklyn.

Building on the success of the WalkNYC project to date, this latest phase integrates detailed transit information for the first time, including real-time digital displays.

Working with NYC DOT and MTA, PentaCityGroup is now integrating the city’s wayfinding system within transit environments – to support greater connectivity and transfer between modes. This exciting new phase of work offers endless opportunities for improving the experience of the city and in delivering major improvements to the people of New York.

New York City's Select Bus Service has improved quality, comfort and journey times for bus passengers on key routes, leading to its expansion into new areas of the city. For the first time, prototype bus stop signs are providing real-time bus departure information and feature detailed onward journey maps. This quality of information is a revelation for bus passengers.

Led by City ID, PentaCityGroup (which includes Billings Jackson Design, Pentagram, RBA Group and T-Kartor) has developed new SBS information signs that are designed to provide pedestrian information for those leaving the bus and improved transit information for those choosing to board or transfer to another route.

With its partners, City ID has developed and tested a range of new concepts for the NYC transit network that aim to reveal information that is tailored to your location. New information concepts include a transfer map that highlights all bus, subway and ferry routes within a five-minute walk of your location, and a new route map that uses the city’s prominent grid pattern and extensive bus network to reveal routes geographically. These concepts provide added functionality to the wayfinding system maps, revealing information that will empower users to make choices about whether to walk or transfer from each stop.

PentaCityGroup are currently working with MTA to update pedestrian maps that are provided within subway stations and with a variety of partners to develop printed maps and guides for visitors.
